Dave Grosby
Dave Grosby, 49 was named the new play-by-play voice of Seattle University basketball on October 3rd,2009. Grosby is no stranger to Seattle sports fans having been a part of the Seattle sports scene since January 1992. ‘The Groz’ arrived after spending the previous 2 years in Los Angeles working mornings on KFI radio where he replaced the legendary Gary Owens in 1989.
His career began when he went in to work with his father at WAKR in Akron,Ohio as an 11 year old boy. He did his first broadcast on the station in October of 1973 making him the youngest sportscaster in the country at a commercial radio station at the age of 13. In 1975, the family moved to Westchester County, New York at the same time that Iona College was making the jump to Division One basketball. Grosby’s father,Al, was President of WFAS radio in White Plains, New York and he acquired the play-by-play rights with a eye towards installing his 15 year old son as the play-by-play voice. Iona hired a young Jim Valvano as coach and Grosby handled the play by play for 6 years as Iona achieved national status earning a pair of NCAA tournament trips during that time.
After attending Pace University, Grosby left for Sacramento, California in 1981 where he worked at KGNR, KTXL TV and KFBK radio respectively for 8 years. Grosby was the play by play voice for Sacramento State Football during that time and, with the arrival of the NBA’s Kings in 1985, was the back-up play-by-play man doing some 100 NBA broadcasts.
After the move from Los Angeles to Seattle,Grosby hosted the afternoon drive sportstalk show on KJR radio as that station became the third in the country to try the new all-sports format. After a year and a half, Grosby replaced the legendary Wayne Cody on KIRO Sportsline. Grosby was also Bob Robertson’s play-by-play partner on Washington State Football broadcasts while handling pre and post game duties for the Seattle Mariners and Seattle Seahawks from 1993-1996.
